Our School Council
At St James School Primary, we have a very active and enthusiastic School Council. This is an important part of school life which offers a platform for the voice of the children in our school. Hearing and learning about their opinions and views matters a great deal to us. They have a unique insight into the impact of whole school decision making and have a keen eye for the details of the day to day running of the school. The small details which can make a big difference.
Being a school council member is a great opportunity for children to develop both their personal skills and a sense of social awareness, from experiencing how to express points of view constructively to being responsible for others’ welfare, both at school and in the wider world.

The whole school have been voting for how we would like to celebrate the Platinum Jubliee later this term.
Remembrance Day
On Thursday morning on 11th November, just before 11am, our School Councillors laid poppy wreaths by each class at the base of our school tower. Our Reception and Year 1 children had also decorated the bricks there with beautiful chalk poppies. The whole school then stopped for a minute silence as we remembered those who had served and given their lives to keep us safe.
Our chosen charity this year is Save The Children and we are supporting their Christmas Jumper appeal on Monday 13th December.
Our School Council - the election process
Our new School Council will be elected every year in October. This year, the School Council is made up of 12 children from Year 2 to 6. One of these children will have been elected by their class following a short election speech.

Making a difference
Each class has a suggestion box which the school council members monitor and use to bring ideas to meetings. The Chair will set the agenda and lead the meeting. Ideas are discussed and a vote taken as to which ideas should be implemented. Minutes are taken during the meeting by our Secretary and shared with each class to ensure the rest of the school knows what is being decided at meetings. Year 1 class also learn of this news.
